Search for a duplicate file finder and two free names come up again and again: dupeGuru and Czkawka. Both are good, open-source and cross-platform. So why would anyone pay for SceneSort Pro? Sometimes they shouldn't. This comparison sets out what each tool does with video specifically, so you can choose the right one for your library.
Disclosure: SceneSort Pro is our product. We've tried to be fair. The two free tools are genuinely good, and we say below when you should use them instead.

dupeGuru has been around for years and is easy to use. Point it at folders, choose a scan type, and it shows groups of duplicates with tools to mark and remove them. Its Standard mode can match on file names (including fuzzy name matching) or on contents. Its Picture mode finds visually similar photos. Its Music mode reads audio tags.
For video, the contents scan is ideal for exact copies, such as a backup of a backup. It won't recognise that a 2 GB original and a 400 MB compressed copy are the same footage, because the bytes differ completely. Fuzzy name matching helps only when the names are similar.
Pick dupeGuru if your duplicates are mostly straight copies across drives, or you're cleaning photos and music as well.
Czkawka (Polish for "hiccup") is fast and does a lot. Alongside duplicate files, it finds empty folders, large files, temporary files, similar images, broken files, files with the wrong extension and similar videos. The Similar Videos tool samples video content, so it can match copies that differ in name, size and encoding. You'll need FFmpeg installed for that tool.
Its limits for video are mainly about workflow. You get groups of matches with file details, but not a visual side-by-side, and once duplicates are gone, it doesn't help with the names or structure of what's left.
Pick Czkawka if you want a free, thorough sweep for duplicates and general clutter, and you're happy to install FFmpeg.
SceneSort Pro is narrower (video only, Windows only) but goes deeper on that one job. A typical session looks like this:
Everything runs on your PC. There's no account, no upload and no subscription. The free edition has every feature, capped at 500 files.
Pick SceneSort Pro if you have a large, messy video library across several drives and want one tool to dedupe it, name it, organise it and keep it browsable.
When you don't need SceneSort: if you only want to delete duplicates once and your names are fine, use Czkawka (for re-encoded copies) or dupeGuru (for exact copies). Both are free. If you're on macOS or Linux, SceneSort isn't an option at all.
SceneSort Pro's free edition runs every feature on up to 500 files, so the test above costs nothing.
